Mariagalante

Post by shipstamps » Sun Sep 14, 2008 5:31 pm

Four stamps have been issued by the Monsterrat Post Office to commemorate the discovery of the island by Columbus 480 years ago. The stamps are as follows: 10c, Montserrat Monastery, Spain; 35c, Columbus sighting Montserrat; 60c Columbus' ship off Montserrat; £1.00, map of Montserrat and the badge of the colony. Montserrat: was discovered on the second voyage of Columbus. As a result of the success of his first voyage all the help he asked for was immediately made available, ships men and supplies. He had a fleet of 17 ships on this occasion. His flagship was the Mariagalante, and this is the vessel on the 60c. stamp. SG315 Sea Breezes Sept 1973
