in command of an expedition to find a North-East passage across the Arctic Ocean and explore the south-west Pacific. In command of the brig RURIK with a crew of only twenty seven men, Kotzebue rounded Cape Horn, discovered the Romanzov, Rurik, and Krusenstern islands, and sailed up the west coast of America to Kamchatka, discovering and naming Kotzebue Gulf and Krusenstern Cape. He returned to Russia in 1818 through the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, unable because of ice to discover a passage through the Arctic.
Five years later, by now promoted captain, he was placed in command of two warships for the dual purpose of carrying reinforcements to Kamchatka and undertaking further scientific investigation He returned home in 1826 with a great collection of previously unknown plants and geological specimens.
