ASGARD II

Built as a wooden brigantine rigged training vessel by the yard of Jack Tyrell, Arklow, Ireland for the Coiste An Asgard (Irish Government).
Launched under the name ASGARD II, named after her famous predecessor who was built in 1905 and did belong to the wife of the English writer Erskine Childers, he used the vessel in 1914 to land rifles at Howth for the Irish volunteer army. The name Asgard comes from the home of the gods in Nordic mythology.
Tonnage 92.67 gross, 50.06 net., dim. 32.43 x 6.4 x 2.9m. (draught), length on deck 25.50m.
Can carry 11 sails with a sail area of 370m³.
One auxiliary 6-cyl. Kelvin Marine diesel engine, 160hp.
Her figurehead is of the famous female sea captain and warrior, Grainne Mhoal, born around 1530 in County Mayo.
Her keel and frames are made of oak, which grows in the Avoca valley.
Accommodation for 5 crew and 20 trainees.
07 March 1981 commissioned homeport Dublin.

She was the first sailing vessel built in Ireland for sixty years.
Took part in many Tall Ships Races and other sailing events and regattas.

11 September 2008 Ireland’s national sail training yacht on a voyage from Falmouth to La Rochelle foundered of the north-western coast of France early Thursday, forcing its 25 crew to take to three life-rafts, French maritime officials said.
The five crew and 20 trainees were picked up unharmed by a French coastguard vessel off the island of Belle Ile, Brittany after the pre-dawn drama.
The captain send out a distress signal around 01.00 GMT after the vessel started taking water.
After been picked up they arrived about three hours later in Belle Island.
The ASGARD II first seen floating with water up to its decks, but 7 hours later she sank.

She is on Ireland 1982 26p sg 526, 1998 30p sg 1185, 30p sg 1190 (same design as sg 1185 but self adhesive), Portugal 1998 0.85 Euro sg 2660. France 1999 0.15 Euro.
