MISIGSSUT (hospital) 21.75kr
Built in 1955 for Ministry of Greenland, Copenhagen, Denmark; Svendborg Skibsverft AIS, Svendborg, Denmark; Gt.232, nt. 99; 35,21m x 6,71m x 2,109m; One Alpha-Diesel A/5 Oil 25A 6Cyl, 240bhp, 9,5kn; ice strengthened.
After the Second World War, tuberculosis widespread in Greenland. In 1955, the Ministry of Greenland had a ship of 200 tons, MISIGSSUT, built.
The vessel was fitted out with modern x-ray equipment, a doctor, nurse and laboratory technician, to sail from settlement to settlement along the inhabited part of the Greenlandic coast and examine the population on every station. This mass survey proved extremely effective - infected people were found and received treatment.
Ten years later, pulmonary tuberculosis had been reduced by 90 per cent, and in 1975, the disease had been brought so much under control that MISIGSSUT had been rendered superfluous and was sold in 1977. She was bought by Satellite Steamship Co., Ltd., Georgetown, Cayman Island and renamed GLOBAL STAR.
