The stamp show the Baltika—not to be confused with the Baltica, for both ships are in service for the U.S.S.R. The Baltika was originally built in 1939 as the Viacheslav Molotov, her name being changed to Baltika after Molotov's fall. Completed in 1940 by the Netherlands Shipbuilding Company, at: Amsterdam, she was assigned to the service Leningrad-Helsingfors-Stockholm¬Copenhagen-London, arriving in the Thames for the first time on May 14, 1940. She has also been on service to the Far East and in the Black Sea. Her gross tonnage is 7,494 (3,565 net) on dimensions 429.2 ft. x 60.2 ft. A turboelectric ship of 7,000 h.p. she has a maximum speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed averaging 18 knots. There are 99 cabins with accommodation for four passengers in the luxury-class, 56 in the first-class, 108 in the second-class, and 140 in the third; she has a crew totaling 133. In 1949 Russia also issued a lr. stamp showing the vessel under her original name. A comparison of the two stamps shows that no changes have been made—at least in the outward appearance of the vessel—in the last 10 years.

Built as a passenger ship under yard No 276 by the N.V. Nederlandsche Dok & Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam for the Soviet Baltic State Shipping Company (BGMP), Leningrad.
17 August 1939 launched as the VYACHESLAV MOLOTOV one sister the IOSIF STALIN.
Tonnage 7,494 gross, 3,452 nrt, 2,643 dwt. Dim. 135.7 x 18.4m
Powered diesel electric by two Stork steam turbines, 12,800 hp. Twin screws, speed 15 knots.
Accommodation for 437 passengers and 161 crew.
April 1940 completed.


Mobilized as the military transport ship VT-509 after the outbreak of the war.
The ship participated in the evacuation from Tallinn in the summer of 1941. She was damaged by a mine and aerial bombing, and was towed back to Leningrad to be repaired. The ship was later used as a stationary hospital ship during the blockade of Leningrad. It also found other uses, its radio station transmitted news and it also functioned as an ammunition factory. The VYACHESLAV MOLOTOV was damaged by German artillery fire in early 1943.
The VYACHESLAV MOLOTOV was repaired and returned as a passenger ship after the second world war. She was later used for the Leningrad-London route, and also for trips to many European countries, Cuba and the United States.
In 1957 she was renamed BALTIKA .
She was also used to transport many international delegations, including those for the 20th Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. In September 1971, as BALTIKA she repatriated many of the 105 Soviet officials, including 45 diplomats, expelled from the United Kingdom for "activities incompatible with their status". She was refitted in 1984 in Denmark.
She was broken up in 1987 at Gadani Beach, Pakistan where she arrived on 28 March 1987 and was broken up by Muzaffar Ahmed & Co.
