SWEDEN POST SUMMER STAMPS CELEBRATE STOCKHOLM’S ARCHIPELAGO.

The summer stamps from Sweden Post issued in 2004, depict Stockholm’s archipelago. Sweden’s capital boasts the country’s most expensive archipelago, whose more than 30.000 islands attract thousands of tourists every year. The stamps were inspired by the work of renowned photographer and local islander Jeppe Wikström.

The thousands of islands that dot Stockholm’s archipelago feature disparate settings and environments. The outlying belt is home to craggy, uninhabited islands whose flora is muted and understated. Farther in toward the mainland, plant life is fuller and more vibrant. People inhabit about 100 of the islands, some of which boast an active agricultural community, whereas others have rock-ribbed wooden landscapes.

I’m amazed by the ability to refine and enhance the clarity on the design in the compact postage stamp format without sacrificing detail, says Jeppe Wikström, on whose photographs the stamps were based. I never cease to be fascinated by Stockholm’s archipelago.

Hugging the outskirts of the archipelago is Gillöga, with its chaotic array of small islands, low-level skerries as well as shallow and hardly discernable canals.

Stora Nassa, firmly ensconced in the outer archipelago, offers high cliffs and narrow sounds. There are as many islets and rocky outcroppings as there are days in a year, some say. This is probably a modest estimate. The passenger vessel in the foreground is the SALTSJÖN.

Långviksskar is encompassed by rocks and stony reefs. Nested in the shallow harbor is a picturesque village complete with boathouse, workshop, woodshed, and fish net house.

The bluish expanses of Nämdöfjarden extend between Ingarölandet and Fågelbrolandet in the northwest and Nämdö in the southwest. Nämdö is one of the larger islands in the archipelago, featuring arable land and home to year round as well as summer residents.
