Heemskerk

Post by shipstamps » Fri Sep 05, 2008 12:48 pm

Abel Tasman, one of the greatest of Dutch navigators, who was born at Lutgegast in Groningen about 1603, is depicted with his ship the Heemskerk on the 3c. Solomons stamp. On August 14, 1642, he was dispatched from Batavia, Java, by Antony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, on a voyage of discovery in search of new lands. The Heemskerk was accompanied by the fluyt Zeehaen, which was a much smaller vessel and whose crew probably had a much more unpleasant voyage in consequence, yet the smaller fluyt seems to get completely overlooked when the voyage is described, probably best known by the discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand. During the voyage, however, Tasman sailed through the Solomon Islands and discovered Ontong, Java, 160 miles north of the island of Ysabel. The stamp, of course, commemorates the Dutchman's visit to the Solomons. He arrived back in Batavia on June 15, 1643, after a 10-month voyage. Sol Is SG203
