Endurance HMS

Post by shipstamps » Fri Sep 05, 2008 12:11 pm

The £1 value of British Antarctic Territory depicting H.M.S. Endurance remains as before decimalisation. This vessel is the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship which supports British interests in Antarctic waters. In addition she assists the British Antarctic Survey in carrying out its scientific research programmes and is fitted with the latest hydrographic surveying equipment, since Antarctic waters are still largely uncharted and much work remains to be done. Successor to H.M.S. Protector (previously mentioned in these articles), the ship was originally the Danish merchant ship Anita Dan, which was specially constructed for operating in ice. She was converted for naval use, being given a flight deck and hangar for two Whirlwind helicopters. Scientific and surveying equipment was also installed.
H.M.S. Endurance has a red hull and mast for easy recognition in ice, particularly from the air. The white superstructure with buff funnel is traditional of the Navy's fleet of survey vessels. The ship displaces some 3,600 tons and is 305 ft. long. A single oil engine gives her a speed of 14 knots (max.) and she has a long range. The ship can be controlled from the crow's nest to give the farthest view through channels of ice. She has a complement of 12 officers and 106 men, including a small detachment of Royal Marines. Accommodation has also been provided for a scientific party. The ship is named after a former vessel in which the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton sailed for the Antarctic in 1914. The following year she was trapped in the Weddel Sea and finally crushed by ice. The present Endurance was renamed by Sir Ernest's granddaughter.
