Belfast HMS and Reward HMS

Post by shipstamps » Fri Sep 05, 2008 12:09 pm

The centre ship could be one of the Rotherham class destroyers, while I think the ship in the foreground is a naval tug (HMS Reward). H.M.S. Edinburgh and Belfast were two sisters of an improved Southampton class design, the Edinburgh being lost in action. Their particulars were: displacement 10,000 tons; length 613 ft. 6 in., overall; beam 63 ft. 4 in., draft 17 ft. 3m. Guns: twelve 6-in., eight 4-in. A.A., 46 2 pdr. pompoms and 20 m.m. A.A. There were six 21-in, torpedo tubes (tripled). Machinery comprised Parsons geared turbines, driving four shafts, developing 80,000 s.h.p. to give 32 knots speed.
There were eight Rotherham class destroyers in the Royal Navy and five similar vessels in the Royal Australian Navy, the "Q" class. They displaced 1,705 tons (Rotherham, 1,750 tons). Dimensions, 358 ft. x 35 ft. x 9.5 ft. (means), 16 ft. (max.). Guns carried were four 4.7-in., four 2 pdr. pompoms, eight 20 m.m. A.A., and they also carried eight 21-in, torpedo tubes. Machinery comprised Parsons geared turbines, driving two shafts, the installation developing 40,000 s.h.p. for a speed of 34 knots. All of these ships were built in 1942, two by Cammell Laird, four at Clydebank and two at Scott's, Greenock. SG265 SB 4/71
