The Yosef Stalin had the difficult task of rescuing the Georgy Sedov, which had been trapped in the polar ice for two years. The Georgy Sedov was located on January 13 1940 by the Yosef Stalin under the command of Capt. Beloussoy and having on board the Arctic explorer Papanin. The Yosef Stalin blasted a channel through the ice and eventually brought the Georgy Sedov into harbour at Murmansk. Capt. Beloussov, Papanin and the Yosef Stalin are depicted on the stamp, while the meeting of Capt. Badigin of the Sedov and the explorer Papanin on board the Yosef Stalin with the Georgy Sedov in the background is the subject of a 50 kopeck stamp. SG898
