Mandovy

Post by shipstamps » Wed Sep 03, 2008 3:43 pm

The iron-sheathed gun-vessel Mandovy, featured on the 1 escudo stamp of Cape Verde was built at Laird's, Birkenhead, in 1879, at a cost of £22,500, and looks more like an old-time Royal yacht than a fighting ship. Her displacement was 462 tons, length 125'/2 ft., beam 241/2 ft., and draft 9 ft. She was a single-screw vessel of 400 i.h.p. with a speed of 10 knots (steam only), coal supply being a normal 80 tons. The ship's complement was 86, and she was one of the twin sister-ships built at Birkenhead together, the other gunboat being named Bengo. There was a slight difference in their armament, the Mandovy ' s being one 5.9in., two 3.4in., and two light guns, while the Benga had one 6in, and two 3.4-in, guns. SG403
