On the 2.50 escudos stamp of Angola is the corvette Mindelo, launched in 1876 at Blackwall Dockyard. Displacing 1,124 tons, she was 170 ft. in length with a beam of 353/4 ft. and draft of 14 ft. Her hull was composite and she was a single-screw ship with an i.h.p. of 900, and speed of 111/2 knots, armed with two 7-in. 4-ton muzzle loading rifled guns (Armstrong), four 4.7-in. guns, and two smaller guns. Her normal coal supply was 130 tons. The ship's complement was 169 and she was a sister-ship of the Rainha de Portugal, both vessels being constructed and completed at Blackwall in the same year at a cost of £74,500 each. SG659
