Built in 1944 in California as a Liberty ship under the name ABRAM S HEWITT, gross tonnage of 7,176. Sold in 1947 and renamed QUEMAR and then ITALO Marsano. SG315

Built as a cargo vessel one of the EC2-S-C1 class under yard No 2726 on the Permanente Metals Shipbuilding Corp. (shipbuilding Division) on yard No 2 at Richmond California as a Liberty ship for the U.S. Maritime Commission.
05 January 1944 launched as the ABRAM S. HEWITT.
Tonnage 7,176 gross, 4,380 net, 10,865 dwt., dim. 441.6 x 56.10 x 37.4ft, draught 27.9ft. on the summer draught
Powered by a 2,500 ihp triple expansion steam engine, one shaft, speed 11 knots. Daily fuel consumption 30 tons. Bunker capacity 1.834 tons.
Range about 14.000 miles.
Bale capacity 499,573 cubic feet, grain capacity 562,608 cubic feet.
Could carry 9,146 tons of cargo excluding her bunkers and fresh water.
Two decks.
Loading/discharging gear 10 – 5 tons, 1 – 50 tons, 1 – 30 tons and one 15 tons derrick.
Crew 81 including 29 gunners.
January 1944 completed, building cost around $ 1,780.000.

After delivering chartered to the War Shipping Administration, and managed by the Black Diamond Steamship Corp., New York until 1946.
January 1947 sold to Cia Transoceanica La Veloce, Italy and renamed QUEMAR, the same year renamed in ITALO MARSANO.
Her tonnage is given then as 7.176 gross, later given as 7,155 gross, 4,362 net.
She was chartered between 1950 and 1951 by Messageries Maritimes (a French company) for the transport of materials and men to Port aux Français (Kerguelen) to construct an airbase there.
1953 She was managed by Andrea Marsano at Genoa.
From 1957 by Andrea Marsano & Sons and renamed GOLFO DI TRIESTE.
1962 Sold to Cia Generale di Navigazione S.p.A., at Cagliari, Italy not renamed.

1964 She made a voyage from Marseilles to Abidjan, sailed Marseille 12 February arrived Abidjan 27 February.
14 December 1964, on a voyage from Gijon to Japan loaded with pig iron she radioed an SOS due to her holds 1 and 2 full of water, she was asking for immediate assistance.
She tried to proceed to Saigon but the flooding increased and the crew had to abandon the vessel in position 11 20N 112 04E. where after she sank.
The 32 crewmembers were rescued from the lifeboats by the British tanker ESSO YORK after two hours, and safely landed at Singapore.

Hello,
My father sailed on this vessel sometime around 1953-1957. Does anyone have any more information or pictures of her during that time? Particularly interested in her voyages to Dutch Guiana (Suriname) to load bauxite.
