Leconte de Lisle

Post by shipstamps » Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:50 am

The Leconte de Lisle was a twin screw steamer of nearly 10,000 tons, built for the Messageries Maritimes in 1922. Used on the Madagascar mail run on which she remained until the outbreak of war.
In 1942 she was seized in Indo China by the Japanese and renamed Teiritsu Maru, and employed as a transport.
In 1945 she was attacked by Allied bombers and while making for shelter she hit a mine and sank in shallow water.
She was restored in 1947 and returned to her original owners, in 1951.
The rear funnel was false and, after restoration, it was removed and a shorter fore funnel fitted. Cameroun SG109
