Post by shipstamps » Wed Sep 03, 2008 9:29 am

This stamp shows the Island’s fishing vessel Galantry S.P.M.192 returning to harbour with her decks covered in ice and snow. This trawler, which was fitted with special refrigeration equipment, was built in 1953 by W J Boot, at Wourbtugge for the French Government, and was then named Job Gouda. She was later renamed Galantry. Her tonnage was 203 and she was powered by a 6-cylinder oil engine.

Built as a trawler in 1953 by N.V. Scheepsbouwwerf “De Dageraad” at Woubrugge, for N.V. Visserijmaatschappij “Medan-Batavia at IJmuiden, Netherlands.
1953 Launched under the name JOB GOUDA. Fish No. IJM 99.
Tonnage 203 gross, 75 net, dim. 110.8 x 23.1 x 12.6ft.
One 6 cyl diesel engine.

1955 Sold to Société de Péche et de Congélation, France, and renamed GALANTRY.
1962 The year was not a successful year for Société de Péche et de Congélation, first they lost the trawler RAVENEL in the beginning of the year, then on 30 October 1962 they lost the trawler GALANTRY.

At the time of her loss, she was the oldest and smallest trawler in the fleet, but in good condition.
When fishing that day on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, and by hoisting/lowering one of the heavy trawl-boards, which keeps the net open, the board hit the ships hull, causing a hole below the waterline near the engine room. Water rushed in and began flooding the vessel, first the pumps could coupe with the water inflow, but soon the engine room got flooded, and the pumps were put out of action.

When the water inflow began a S.O.S. was given, with position and the cause of the damage, the crew with in their mind the loss of the RAVENEL was very afraid, but they were lucky, the vessel stayed long enough afloat for the crew, to be taken on board of a Canadian trawler, before the GALANTRY sank below the dark green waves.
