Submarin, one of a class of 24 similar submarines built in Leningrad with a surface displacement of 959 tons submerged 1,355 tons. L 239'6" x 23' x 13'9". Diesel /electric powered 2,500/1,200 hp. Speed 15 surface knots 8 submerged. Carried 78 tons fuel oil giving a range of 7,000 miles at 9 knots. Crew of 44. She was lost in the Barents Sea in July 1942. SG4211

Built as a diesel powered submarine at Ordzhonikidze (Baltiyskiy Shipyard) at Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, for the Russian Navy.
05 March 1927 laid down.
12 July 1929 launched under the name KRASNOGVARDEETS (sometimes given as KRASNOGVARDEEC KRASNOGVARDETS, KRASNOGVARDEYETS), the name means Red Guardsman. She was one of the Dekabrist class.
Displacement. 938 surfaced, 1.360 dived. Dim. 78.2 x 6.6 x 3.8m.
Powered by two diesels each 1.100 hp. speed 14.3 knots surfaced, two electro motors 1.050 hp., speed dived 8.7 knots. Two shafts. Bunker capacity 78 tons.
Submerged endurance 73 hours, surfaced endurance 28 days, or 8950 miles by 8 knots surfaced, 150 mile by 3 knots submerged.
Armament 1 – 100mm., 1 – 45 mm., 1 – 7.62mm. Torpedo tubes 8 – 21 inch, six bow, 2 stern. Torpedoes 14.
Crew 10 officers and 43 men.
01 Oct. 1931 commissioned, for Baltic service.

Between May and June transferred from the Baltic to Murmansk via the just opened Belomar Cannel. Three of this class were transferred and she became the first Russian submarines based in the Northern waters.
1934 She was renamed D-3 (D meant Dekabrist).
Before World War II mostly used for training.
Feb. 1938 took part in the rescue of the personnel of the North Pole scientific station.
During World War took part in 7 patrols in which she sank 9 enemy ships and damaged two.
17 January 1942, awarded with the Order of the red Banner.
1942 Honoured with the status Guards.
She was lost on her 8th war patrol after 10 June 1942 in the Tana-fjord, possible due to mines.

One of her sisters the D2 is now a museum ship at St.Petersburg.
