Mail Cutter built circa 1814 for General Post Office. Up to 18th century communications across Channel were irregular. Under a statute of Queen Anne letters might be brought from overseas by private ships. It was not until.1799 that Postmaster General had powers to send letters overseas by mail contract. The GPO started first regular service from Weymouth to Channel Isles. operating fortnightly. Prior to this from about 1780 packet boats had been dispatched as required - Guernsey-Sark 1963.
