Montgomery

The Montgomery which also appears on a 300f. stamp of Malagasy, is depicted on both stamps as a brig, the Antigua stamp defining her as an American privateer. She was one of the first13 frigates to be authorised by the Continental Congress, on December 13, 1775. She was built by Lancaster Burling at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and launched late in October 1776. As the second Montgomery, a sloop or schooner, was not built until 1813 for duty on Lake Champlain, where she remained until being sold in 1815, it must be a privateer of this name on the Bicentennial stamps. The privateer Montgomery took four prizes while on a cruise to the West Indies. During another cruise she had a fight with a large ship, during which she lost 17 men. Apparently she also had a clash with the British ship Millern, shown on another stamp. SG492
