Macdhui

Post by shipstamps » Fri Aug 22, 2008 4:44 pm

The Macdhui was built in 1931 by Barclay, Curie and Co., Ltd., at Glasgow, for the New Guinea service of Burns Philp. A vessel of 4,561 tons gross, 2,626 net, she was launched on December 23. Her length was 341 ft. 9 in.; beam 51 ft. 2 in. draft 22 ft. depth 29 ft. 7 in. Oil engines, built by S. G. Kincaid, at Greenock, developed 635 nhp. Her passenger capacity was 167. When war broke out in the Pacific she was used to carry Australian troops, high octane fuel and munitions for the fighting in New Guinea. She evacuated the last women and children from Rabaul before the port fell to the Japanese. The ship was lost on June 17, 1942, when 18 Japanese bombers and nine fighter aircraft attacked Port Moresby where she was unloading. She got away from her mooring and was trying to take evasive action when hit by one of the 56 bombs dropped during the raid. It hit the Macdhui just behind her bridge and ripped through three decks before exploding. She was still reasonably functional but the following day the bombers returned and four of the 68 bombs they dropped scored direct him. The vessel's wreckage still lies half submerged in the harbour of Port Moresby. SG298

100th Anniversary of the Royal Papua Yacht Club in Port Moresby.
BRIEF HISTORY
The Royal Papua Yacht Club is one of the premier and long-serving clubs in Papua New Guinea.
Established in 1974, we have serviced members and visitors for over 4 decades. The marina caters for 9-25m yachts, dinghies or ships, and has a total of 256 berths. Our facilities also include a restaurant, bar, cafe, gym, storage facility for live aboard members, parking spaces, kids play area and a small outdoor stage and seating area.
The state of emergency has ended and business houses be slowly picking up from where they had left off. The Royal Papua Yacht Club, like many others, is looking forward to welcoming its members back and get its programs up and running again.
One of which includes the Clubs’s 100 year Anniversary.
Having recently turned 99 on the 02nd of June 2020, the Club’s 100 Year Celebration Sub-Committe is already preparing for the 100 Year Anniversary in 2021.
The Sub-Committee’s Chair Rachel Thomson says the sub-committee has already begun planning and they are taking a holistic approach in planning the celebration.
“The sub-committee is made up of representatives from all of the club’s (RPYC) sub-clubs and each representatives is working with the committees from all of the clubs to ensure we involve the Yacht Club and the members,” says Thomson.
She added that the sub-committe will be visiting the club’s history book and will feature events such as Yachting, Thursday Disco Night, and replicate the Green Jade Restaurant, in the 100 Year celebration.
The Royal Papua Yacht Club currently has close to 3,000 members made up of national and expat communities.
The Club’s General Manager Aaron Batts says the Club has welcomed its members back and is looking forward to ending the year in high note.
He added like many other hospitality businesses, the club was also affected by the nationwide State of Emergency but has been adhering to all SOE directives from the Government.
Apart from the Clubs 100 Year preparations, the Royal Papua Yacht Club will be commemorating the 78th Bombing Anniversary of MV Machdui on the 18th June 2021.
