The barque Tory, 18c stamp, makes her second appearance on New Zealand stamps. The vessel was depicted on the 3d. New Zealand centennial stamp of 1940, where she is shown on the left of the three vessels at Petone Beach, Wellington on January 22, 1840, with the main body of New Zealand settlers. The Tory arrived first on September 21 1839. The artist who designed the stamp however slipped up giving the ships full rigs with double topsail yards, incidentally not used until 15 years later. The vessel was a 3-masted barque, built in 1834 for Joseph Soames, London. Length was 111 ft. 3 in., beam 27 ft. 7 in. and depth 11ft. Purchased by the New Zealand company in 1839, she left Plymouth on May 12 of the same year with 35 immigrants headed by Col. Wakefield as the advance party for the first organised settlement of New Zealand. She arrived in Queen Charlotte Sound on September 17, 1839 and entered Port Nicholson three days later. SG1073
