Sokongen

Post by shipstamps » Tue Aug 19, 2008 11:55 am

An interesting little vessel is seen on the stamp from Greenland. It is the wooden auxiliary schooner Sokongen (ex-Knud), built in 1920 by the Nakskov Shipyard for the Royal Greenland Trade Department, and registered at Godthab, Greenland. Length (overall) 83ft., beam 23ft. 2in., draft 7ft. 9in.. In the 1971 register she is under a new name, Polar Aegidius (ex-Sokongen, 1969), her length now appearing as 85ft.2in., other dimensions unchanged. Gross 104; net 53; deadweight 120 tons. Engine: diesel by A/S Tuxham, Copenhagen, 64 bhp. The vessel has a cargo space of 5,000 cub. ft. grain. One hatch, served by two derricks each of 1 ton capacity. She has the reputation of having sailed in more ice than any other Greenland vessel. She was the ship of the Thule Expedition of Knud Rasmussen to Hudson's Bay. SG82
