Palang (destroyer)

Post by shipstamps » Tue Aug 19, 2008 11:52 am

The two vessels have been, identified as the Bahr and Pa/ang. two sister-ships. As there is no identification number showing on the nearest ship it could be either, so I have merely put them in alphabetical order of name.
The Babr was the former USS Zellars and the Palang, ex-USS. Stormes. Both were built at Todd Pacific Shipyards The Babr was launched on July 19, 1944, and commissioned October 25, 1944. The Palang was launched on November 4, 1944, and completed January 27, 1945. Both were Fram II conversion des¬troyers of the A//en M Sumner class.
They were nominally transferred to Iran from U.S. Navy in March 1971 for delivery in 1972, and renamed on transfer with names previously used for the ex British "Loch" Class (Babr,) and a— British Algerine Class (Paltang). I can see this presenting quite a problem in the future. These two ships were paid off on October 30, 1969, and December 1966, respectively. General details for both ships on the stamp: Displacement standard 2,200 tons, loaded 3,320 tons; Engines: two geared turbines, twin screws, 60,000 shaft horse power. Boilers: four. Armament: six 5in, dual purpose guns. Missiles: Four standard launchers with seven re-loads each A.S. weapons: two fixed hedgehogs. Depth charges: two triple torpedo launchers M.K 32 and two fixed torpedo launchers M,K. 25. Two Drone A/S helicopters. Complement: peace 274, war 345. SG1917
