Tenchi Maru

Post by shipstamps » Tue Aug 19, 2008 7:57 am

The Tenchi Maru was a state barge built in 1630 as a typical warship of the Tokugawa Government. During the age of civil wars, various warships were actively in use in the Seto Inland Sea and other areas. Particularly the Atakebune was a prominent warship until the Tokugawa government prohibited its construction and possession in order to weaken the power lords in Western Japan. After that, the Sekibune became the main warship. The Tenchi Maru, with a length of 33 metres, a width of 7.2 metres and rowed by 78 oarmen, was the largest Sekibune in those days. It was a beautiful craft with its body lacquered in vermillion.
