Magga Dan, was built for J. Lauritzen, of Esbjerg, Denmark, by Aalborg Vaerft A/S, Aalborg in September 1956. The ship took the main part of the Trans Antarctic Expedition in 1957 to Shackleton Base in the Weddell Sea. She was specially designed and strengthened for manoeuvrability in ice, and can be navigated from her specially equipped crows nest. Special fins were fitted to protect her propeller and the hull was painted red to make her conspicuous in the ice. She was bought by Ascension Inc., of Monrovia, Liberia, in 1970 and renamed SAO NICOLAU. SG118
