This stamp shows H.M.S. Naiad, which visited the Island in 1968. This Leander Class frigate, Pennant No. F39, was built by Yarrow and Co., Ltd., at Scotstoun. Glasgow, Laid down on 30.10.1962, she was launched 4.11.1963, and commissioned 15.3.1965. This class of frigate is considered the most powerful and seaworthy the Navy has ever had. Displacement is 2,200 tons. Designed to hunt down and destroy high speed submarines in all weathers, as general purpose ships they can engage ships, aircraft and shore targets. To these ends they carry every form of weapon and detection device that can be fitted into ships of their size. Features include long range air warning radar; the "Seacat" antiaircraft missile system, advanced submarine detection equipment and a light-weight Wasp anti-submarine helicopter armed with homing torpedoes.
