Cable ship built 1867 Laing, Sunderland for Norwood & Co. 1856Gt 1473nt. L283’. B34’7” Dr17’9”. Compound engine 4-cyl 207hp. Purchased 1870 by India Rubber, Gutta Percha & Telegraph Works Co. Ltd, London for conversion into cable laying ship. Cut in two, lengthened by 40’. Tanks capable of holding 1500tn cable were built in. Cable laying machinery built by Easton & Anderson consisted of single paying out machine aft and duplex machine with 50hp steam engine forward. Torpedoed and sunk by German submarine whilst, off Funchal while engaged in diverting the German South American cable for the benefit of the French.

She was laid down as the STELLA.
12 November 1867 launched as the DACIA.

She was sunk on 03 December 1916 on the Funchal Roads, Madeira by the German submarine U-38 when she was engaged in diverting the German South America cable for the benefit of French. There were not any casualties.
