Kirksons

Post by shipstamps » Thu Jul 10, 2008 5:37 pm

A motorship, the Kirksons, is depicted on the Turks & Caicos stamp. A vessel of 300 tons she is under contract with the Turks Islands' Government, and plies between Kingston, Jamaica, and Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands, at monthly intervals, bringing in mail and the bulk of supplies and taking out salt from the dependency. The Turks Island Salt Co., Ltd, has the exclusive right to export salt from the dependency and employs the Kirksons for the work. The vessel has been making regular service calls since 1943. A number of endeavours were made, beginning in 1873, to subsidise a regular steamer service with Jamaica, but what success there was, was rather short lived. In 1943, however, arrangements were made for the Kirksons, of Cayman Islands, registry, to make a minimum of 12 round trips annually between Kingston and Grand Turk and this service is still being maintained. The Kirksons is a wooden vessel of 330 gross tons, 209 net, and was built in 1943 by J. S. Ryan, of Cayman Islands. SG235 (SB 3/55)
