Iberia (P & O)

Post by shipstamps » Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:51 pm

Above the Hindostan on the Qatar stamp is the Iberia of the P. & 0. but the funnel looks a bit odd with the shading giving it a red appearance, unlike the yellow it should be. Launched on January 21, 1954, she made her maiden voyage to Australia from Tilbury on September 28 of that same year. Built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast, for P.& 0. her gross was 29,226; net 16,299. Length was 718 ft.8 in.; breadth 90 ft. 10 in., and draft 30 ft. 5 in. Depth was 40 ft 1 in. Twin screws were driven by six steam turbines, developing 42,500 s.h.p. for a speed of 22 knots. She was sold for breaking up in Taiwan in 1972. SG503 and Hong Kong SG247
