.). Christmas Island was visited by the Pigot in 1771. After spending three days unsuccessfully trying to find an anchorage, Capt. George Richardson finally sent a cutter ashore, where the men collected land crabs and birds. The stamp designer seems to have given the ship of 1771 an ensign in use in the Royal Navy from 1625 to 1707, an all-red flag with the Cross of St. George in the fly, but there was no ship of the Royal Navy named Pigot until 1778.
