Elizabeth Bonaventure, galleon. A "Queen's Ship" (the title "H.M.S." did not come into use until after Charles II gave the Navy his Royal favour and patronage, calling it the Royal Navy). The galleon was the flagship of Sir Francis Drake on his famous voyage to the West Indies in 1585-6, when he attacked and sacked many Spanish possessions. On his last voyage in 1595. the Elizabeth Bonaventure was again part of the fleet. She was built in 1567, rebuilt in 1581. She carried 47 guns and was 680 tons (builder's measurement). The guns were as follows: two 60 pdr. (cannon); two 32 pdr. (demi-cannon); eleven 18 pdr. (culverins); fourteen 9 pdr. (demi-culverins); four 6 pdr. (Sakers); fourteen small guns (two mynions, two port-piece halls, four port-piece chambers, two fowler halls, four curtails). The Elizabeth Bonaventure was broken up in 1611.SG242
