The exotic-looking craft on the Mexican 80e air stamp depicts a raft of balsa wood named the Acali, which arrived on the Mexican coast on March 7, 1975, after crossing the Atlantic from the Canary Islands. Aboard the raft were a group of persons of both sexes and differing nationalities. They left the Canaries in May 1973 and arrived on the coast of Yucatan on August 21. The strange object of the expedition was to study the behaviour of people in close contact with one another, people of different races, differing habits, dress and temperament.
