Ark (Noah)

Post by shipstamps » Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:25 pm

. Israel has prepared a special festival issue of stamps for the Jewish New Year of 5730 (1969), the designs being delightfully whimsical without any disrespect to Noah. All are based on the Biblical record of the Flood.

The Ark appears on each design, but it is certainly unlike any representation of Noah's vessel that you have previously seen. On the 12a. stamp Noah is seen obeying the command "Make yourself an Ark of gopher wood" (Genesis 6: 14). "They went into the Ark with Noah, two and two" (Gen. 7: 15), is represented on the 15a. ". . and the Ark floated on the . . . waters" (Gen. 7:18), is the subject of the 35a. design. "Then he sent forth a dove" (Gen. 8: 8) is shown on the 40a stamp. Finally the rainbow "... seen in the clouds" (Gen. 9: 14), 60a. stamp.
