Segantini

Post by shipstamps » Thu Jun 26, 2008 6:00 pm

This fishing boat is on the small lake of Pusiano, near Como, but on this ocassion is being used for the transport of cattle across the lake. A framework for a single awning on the crafts stern frames a mother and her baby. The picture is from the painting "Ave Maria on the lake" by Segantini, dated 1882, with which he won the Rembrandt Grand Prize at the Amsterdam Exhibition of 1883. Segentini later made a second version of the painting similar to the first but much brighter. (Info E W Argyle Sea Breezes Dec 1961.)
