Passenger liner built as JOHAN VAN OLDENBARNVELT Nedelandsche SB Mij. Amsterdam. Launched 3rd August 1929 she carried 1289 passengers in 3 classes. Maiden voyage Amsterdam-Dutch East Indies. Under charter Holland America Line one voyage Amsterdam-New York 30th August 1939.
Fitted out at Harland and Wolff as a troop transport in 1940 with Willemstad as her home port for the duration of the war.
Released from Naval service 1945 and re-entered Amsterdam-Indonesia service 1946 after overhaul. Refitted 1951 at Amsterdam for emigrant service to Australia.
1959 refitted for round the world service, tonnage increased to29314gt. Pass 1210. First voyage April, Amsterdam-Sidney- New York-Amsterdam.
Sold 1962 to Greek Line. Overhaul at Genoa 1963 with modernised accommodation and renamed LAKONIA. From April used for cruising Southampton-Canary Islands. Late evening 22 December 200 nautical miles off Madeira with over 1000 on board she caught fire. The blaze spread quickly, claiming 128 lives. Survivors took to the boats. 24th December the Norwegian Salvage tug HERCULES took the burning ship in tow and attempted to reach Gibraltar. On 29th December LAKONIA heeled over and sank 250 nautical miles west of Gibraltar. Liberia 1988 SG1705.

Built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard No 194 by the Nederlandse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam for the Stoomvaart Maatsschappij Nederland in Amsterdam.
03 August 1929 launched as the JOJAN VAN OLDENBARNEVELT. Named after the statesman Johnan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_van_Oldenbarnevelt
Tonnage 19,040 grt, 10,955 nrt, dim. 185.6 x 22.8m, length bpp. 178.7m.
Powered by two Sulzer diesel engines, 14,000 hp, service speed 17 knots, maximum 19 knots.
Accommodation for 336 first class, 280 second class and 64 third class, 60 in fourth class passengers,
Cargo capacity 9,000 tons.
