Glengorm Castle (Union Castle)

Post by shipstamps » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:47 am

Glengorm Castle was a member of the "G" class and was built as the GERMAN.
Built by harland and Wolff and launched on the 4th August 1898. Her maiden arrival at Capetown was on 29th January 1899. A few days after completion, on 16th November 1898, she sank the Wilson Lines CORSO in the River Elbe.
At the outbreak of the First World War she was requisitioned and converted to a hospital ship and her name changed, for obvious reasons, to Glengorm Castle.
She served as a hospital ship for seven years and another four years as a troopship.
She was demobilised in 1925 and resumed her service on the intermediate route. She was sold in 1930 to a Dutch shipbreaker. She was the last of the "G" class vessels.
