Rene De Chateaubriand

St. Pierre and Miquelon issued a set of three stamps in 1968. The portraits are good, but no one could say that about the ships. In fact I should imagine they are merely the artist's impression of how they might have looked. Rene De Chateaubriand is featured on the 6f. stamp. He made a trip to America in a merchant vessel in 1791 and made capital out of it by not only writing about what he saw, but about what neither he nor anyone else has seen, such as "the heavy and ungraceful flight of penguins". In his book "Le Voyage d' Amerique", Chateaubriand described the Niagara Falls at some length although he did not go to see them.
