Built as a cargo- passenger vessel under yard No 138 on the yard of Wm. Simons & Co, Renfrew, Great Britain as a iron, two decked passenger- cargo vessel.
04 February 1868 launched under the name INDIA.
Tonnage 2.477 gross, dim. 94.97 x 11.19 x 7.19m.
A 2 cyl inverted compound steam engine, manufactured by the shipbuilder, 469 nhp., single screw, speed 12 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 120 salon passengers and 575 steerage.
During construction bought by the Anchor Line at Glasgow, not renamed.
Square rigged.
February 1869 completed.

She was the first North Atlantic steamer (apart from BRANDON of the London & Limerick Steamship Company, who in 1854 made on Atlantic crossing) who was fitted out with a compound engine.

06 Feb. 1869 sailed for her maiden voyage from Glasgow to Moville and New York.
On her third westbound voyage in May 1869 from the Clyde to New York, she made the crossing in 10 days and 7 hours, with a average speed of 11.47 knots, with a coal consumption of 36 tons per day.
08 July 1874, she sailed for the last time from Glasgow in this service via Queenstown to New York.
1874 Transferred to the Glasgow, Mediterranean-New York-Glasgow service, made only three voyages in this service.
1875 Transferred to the Glasgow-Liverpool via Suez Canal to Bombay service, made also 3 voyages from Bombay – Mediterranean – New York – Glasgow. Altogether she made 18 round voyages in the Bombay service.
1877 Re-engined by D & W Henderson with new compound engines, her square rig removed.
1882 Again in the service from Glasgow via the Mediterranean to New York- Glasgow, made 30 voyages.
16 April 1893 she made her last voyage from Leghorn-Naples-New York arrived at New York on 15 May.
August 1894 sold for scrapping.
