TALWAR CLASS and BRAHMAPUTRA (F31) INS

The two frigates depict on this stamp are one of the Talwar class and one of the Brahmaputra class.

The Talwar class frigates were built by the Baltisky Zavod yard in St Petersburg for the Indian Navy.
The first the INS TALWAR (F40) (Sabre) was delivered in May 2002, the second INS TRISHUL (F43) (Trident) in November 2002 and the third INS TABAR (F44) (battle-axe) in May 2003.
The class has the following specifications.
Displacement 3.250 ton standard, 4.035 ton full load. Dim. 124.8 x 15.2 x 4.2m. (draught).
Powered by M7N. 1E gas turbine plant which comprise of 2 x DS—71 cruise turbines and 2 x DT-59 boost turbines in two engines rooms, 57.000 hp., twin shafts, speed 32 knots.
Range 4.500 miles against 18 knots.
Armament 8 SSN-27 SSM and 24 SA-N-12 SAM missile launchers. 2 – 30mm Kortik guns and SA-N-11 (32 SAMs) CIWS. 1 – 100mm gun. 2 – 533mm torpedo tubes.
Carries one helicopter.
Crew 180 including 18 officers.

The frigate of the Brahmaputra class carried the pendant No. F?1, only one frigate of this class has the end number one, that is the lead ship of the class, the BRAHMAPUTRA (F31).

Built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers at Calcutta for the Indian Navy.
1989 Keel laid down.
29 January 1994 launched under the name INS BRAHMAPUTRA (F31), named after a river in India, she was the lead ship of her class the other two are the INS BEAS and INS BETWA.
Displacement 4.300 tons full load. Dim. 126.4 x 14.5 x 4.5m. (draught)
Powered by 2 cruise diesels 10.000 bhp, and 2AM-boost gas turbines 54.000 bhp, twin shafts, speed 30+ knots.
Fuel capacity 438 tons. Range 1.300 miles by 29 knots.
Armament: 16SS-N-25 SSM missile launchers, 1 – 100mm gun. 4 – 6 barreled Gatling guns. 2 RBU-6000 Anti-submarine mortars. 10 – 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 312.
14 April 2000 commissioned.

The class is an improved version of the Godavari class. During her building there have been extensive delays in construction, the BRAHMAPUTRA was completed 11 years after she was laid down.
She took part in the evacuation of Indian, Sri Lankan and Nepalese civilians from Beirut during the recent Israeli – Libanese conflict in 2006.
2006 In service by the Indian Navy.
