JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun May 03, 2009 8:50 pm

What must surely be the most unusual presidential yacht is the JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA, shown on the 30f. stamp of the Central African Republic. A Stern view of her is depicted on a 40f. stamp.
I am told that the full name of the ship is LE MARECHAL JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA.
The vessel was constructed in 1974 at Bangui at the yard of the A.C.C.F. with the help of the Soc. Francaise de Constructions Navales at Chalons sur Seone, France.
She has a length of 47 meter, and is propelled by two Payaud motors of 400 hp.
She belongs to the President of the Central African Republique after whom she is named but the stamps omit “Le Marchal”.
Every Saturday and Sunday tourists are enabled to make trips on the vessel towards Mongaumba, 80 km. from Bangai.

(Bokassa lived from 1921-1996 but before he died he was already removed from power on 20 September 1979, most probably the vessel was renamed when he was removed, but can not find any more on her.)

All info on her welcome.
