VIDAL HMS 1954 survey vessel

The survey vessel HMS VIDAL was built by the Chatham Dockyard at Chatham for the Royal Navy.
05 July 1950 keel laid down.
31 July 1951 launched.
Displacement 1.940 tons standard. Dim. 297 x 40 x 10½ft.
Powered by diesel engines 8.300 hp, speed 12 knots. Twin screws.
Armament 4 – 3 pdrs (saluting) and depth charges.
She was the first surveying vessel equipped with a helicopter.
Crew 161.
29 March 1954 commissioned. Homeport Chatham.

She was the last surface vessel built at the Chatham Dockyard; thereafter only 6 submarines were built before the yard only was used for refit work on warships.
1958-1965 General surveying duties West Indies.
1966-1970 At the Far East.
Her refits during this period mostly carried out at Chatham.
1962 Fitted out with a closed bridge, when built she had a open bridge. On the stamp she is showed after her refit in 1962.
1976 Sold for breaking up, she was broken up in Brugge, (Bruges) Belgium.
