AMORELA ferry

In 1988/89 the shipbuilding industry of Split which has a long tradition in the building of ships all over the world constructed the twin ferry ships AMORELLA and ISABELLA to the highest Scandinavian standards for the Finish Viking Line.
AMORELLA is the first modern ferry built there. She has 12 decks, with two vehicle decks, a total storage length of almost 3km.
She has cabins for over 2.000 passengers and there are the same number of seats in the various restaurants, clubs and bars on the ship.
There are various meeting rooms, conference and seminar halls, with additional 300 seats. Children can play in nurseries, while parents can do there business or shopping in the duty free shops.
The ship is equipped by computer controlled anti-tilt tanks against rolling and has wing stabilisers.
Both ships were named ‘ships of the year in their class for 1988/1989’ in the journal “Maritime Reporter & Engineering News.

Built as passenger ro-ro cargo ferry under yard 356 by Sour-Brodogradjevna Industrija, Split Yugoslavia for the SF-Line Ab. Mariahamn, Åland, Finland.
03 February 1986 ordered.
18 July 1987 launched as the AMORELLA, three sisters, ISABELLA, FRANS SUELL and CROWN OF SCANDINAVIA.
Tonnage 34.384 grt, 19.862 net, 3.690dwt., dim. 169.40 x 27.61 x 6.26m. (draught)
Powered by 4 Wärtsila-Pielstick 12PC2-6V-400 diesels, 24.000 kW, twin screws, speed 21.5 knots.
Daily oil consumption 79 tons, bunker capacity 683m³ HFO and 164m³ marine diesel (mdo).
Two bow thrusters.
Accommodation for 2420 passengers and 1946 berths.
Can carry 550 cars, and has 970 lane meters.
Her bow door is high 4.90 x 7.00m, and her two stern doors 4.90 x 7.40m.
Ice class 1A.
28 September 1988 delivered to owners. Homeport Mariahamn.

The original planned delivery date was March 1988 but due to delays, the construction was not completed until September.
01 October 1988 sailed from Split bound for Helsingfors where she arrived on 12 October 1988.
14 October 1988 in the ferry service between Åbo-Mariahamn and Stockholm, managed by the Viking Line.

01 February 1993 at about 06.30 she ran aground 50 meters from Tisterögrunds near Stockholm, she refloated under her own power, damaged her bottom plates in the grounding and lost diesel oil, and water was leaking in.
After disembarking her passengers in Stockholm she sailed for Luonnonmaan Telakka yard, Naantali, Finland for repairs.

27 February 1995 she got on fire in one of her cabins, but the fire was extinguished by the ships fire-fighters.
12 April 1995 owned by the Viking Line, Mariahamn.
From July 1999 she made calls on the Åland islands in both directions to still be able to sell tax-free goods, before she called only in the daytime crossing.
10 October 2001 on a voyage from Stockholm to Åbo she got again on fire in a cabin, but the crew put it out.
19 May 2005 a car parked in the car deck got on fire, but it was put out by her ships crew.

Till 2009 was she used almost all her time in the service from Stockholm via Mariahamn to Åbo, with occasionally an other place of call. Still in service.
IMO NO 8601915.

14 December 2013 she grounded after losing power in the Aaland archipelago at Julgrund outside of Foegloe on a voyage from Turku to Stockholm with on board 1,945 passengers. She grounded at 12.40 pm.
No passengers were injured and they were staying on board till the ship could be refloated and towed to a harbour.
The same day at 18.45 LT was she refloated by her own power and sailed to Mariehamn.
