WARRIGAL

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue May 26, 2009 9:11 pm

She was built as a centre-board auxiliary ketch at Brisbane Waters (NSW) in 1901, not a yard of owner given.
Launched under the name WARRIGAL.
Tonnage 90 ton gross, dim. 91 x 22.8ft.
One auxiliary engine 40 hp.
Ketch rigged.
Registered at Melbourne, Australia.

She was bought by the Norfolk Island Shipping Company for the purpose of exporting local produce.

She was loading timber off Kingston, Norfolk Island on 17th March 1918.
The loading was stopped with the onset of stormy weather and the vessel was seen to head south towards Phillip Island.
18 March cyclonic winds swept over Norfolk Island and logs (apparently from the cargo) were washed into Slaughter Bay.
A search when the weather had improved by a whaleboat from the island failed to locate the missing ketch.
29 March pieces of wreckage and one of her boats were found washed ashore.
In the enquire it was stated that she was lost a sea with the loss of her crew of seven.
