JOANNES PATERSSON / MAGNUS HEINASON / SJUDARBERG.

On 1 June 1987 the Faroese Postal service issued three stamps to commemorate the Faroese deepsea fishing industry. The stamp depicts models of trawlers designed by Barour Jakupsson.

Faroese deepsea fishing started in the 1870’s with sailing cutters and schooners, extending from Rockall to the north of Iceland, and later to Greenland. In 1920 the fleet was motorized. At the turn of the century British steam trawlers moved into the North Atlantic, gradually ruining Faroese fishing.

By 1939 the Faroese fleet consisted of ten steam trawlers purchased in Great Britain. In 1947 it had grown to 36, mostly old coal fired trawlers between 270 and 800 tons.
By 1956 they were reduced to ten and Faroese fishermen had to look elsewhere for work.
Around 1960 local businessmen and politicians initiated the modernization and growth of the fishing fleet which now contains some of the finest trawlers on the North Atlantic.
