Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Jun 11, 2009 8:14 pm

The stamp issued in 1997 by Ireland depict the embarkation of emigrants on a sailing packet at Waterloo Dock in Liverpool, the stamp depict a ship but it is unknown which packet ship is depict.
The design of the stamp comes from an illustration of the London News of 6 July 1850.
During the Great Irish Famine (in Irish An Gorte Mór) as given on the stamp, approximately one million Irish people died and an other million emigrated overseas mostly to the USA via Liverpool.

More on this you can find http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Irish_Famine

Waterloo Dock closed for shipping in 1988.

As given by the illustration:

The scene in the Waterloo dock at Liverpool, where all the American sailing packets are berthing, is at all times a very busy one, but on the morning of the departure of a large ship, with a full complement of emigrants, it is peculiarly exciting and interesting. The passengers have undergone inspection, and many of them have taken up their quarters on board for twenty-four hours previously, as they are entitled to do by terms of the act of Parliament.
