FAIRWIND cruise vessel

Built under yard no 700 as a passenger vessel by John Brown & Co. (Clydebank) Ltd. for the Cunard Line.
22 November 1956 launched under the name SYLVANIA.
Tonnage 16.700 gross, 7.394 net, 9.495 dwt. Dim. 185.40 x 24.49 x 14.10m. Draught 8.94m.
Powered by four Pametrada steam turbines with a total output of 24.5000 shp., speed 20 knots, twin screws.
Passenger accommodation for 154 first, 724 tourist class, crew 461.
June 1957delivered to owners.

Built for the Cunard Line together with three sisterships for the liner service between Liverpool and Montreal.
05 June 1957 sailed for her maiden voyage from Greenock to Montreal, then in the liner service between Liverpool and Montreal. During the winter season between Liverpool and New York.
November 1967 sailed for her last voyage in the liner service across the North Atlantic and North America, thereafter only used for cruising first in the Mediterranean.
April 1968 made her last cruise voyage for the Cunard, and after arrival laid up.

The same year sold to Fairwinds Shipping Corp., Monrovia, Liberia, a daughter company of the Sitmar, renamed in FAIRWIND.
The intention was to use her in the emigrant service between Europe to Australia, but by the declining emigrant supply, she was instead laid up again.

14 Oct. 1970 arrived at Trieste and converted in a cruise ship. Passenger accommodation for 906 passengers. Tonnage given as 16.667 gross.
Used from American ports.
1980 Transferred to Sitmar Cruises Inc., Liberia, and managed by S.A.M.
1988 Renamed in SITMAR FAIRWIND.
01 Sept. 1989 the Sitmar Line is bought by the P&O and the SITMAR FAIRWIND is renamed on 09 Sept. 1988 in DAWN PRINCESS. Managed by the Princess Cruises Inc.
13 January 1993 out of service.

After 12 months on the sale list she was sold.
1993 Sold to Happy Days Shipping Ltd., Bahamas and renamed in ALBATROS, managed by Shipping Management S.A.M. (V Ships), Bahamas. Chartered by the German travel agent ‘Reisen Phoenix’ and used in the German market.

16 May 1997 touched the rocky seabed when leaving St Mary’s Isles of Scilly, causing two large holes in the hull and flooding of some machinery spaces.
Passengers disembarked and temporary repairs carried out prior to dry-docking in Southampton.

After a two-month dry-dock period in Southampton she sailed out again, but had to make a call at Bremerhaven for boiler problems.

The then 46 year old ship was taken out of service in November 2003, due to technical problems, her next voyages were cancelled, and she was laid up at Genoa.
December 2003 sold to Indian shipbreakers.
Sailed from Genoa, for her last voyage under the name GENOA,and arrived at Alang 10 January 2004.

The Swedish stamp depicts her leaving of arriving at a Swedish port.
