Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jul 19, 2009 8:56 pm

In 2001 Australia and Hong Kong did have a joint issues to celebrates dragon boat racing in both Australia and Hong Kong. The Dragon Boat (Tuen Ng) Festival with its spectacular dragon boats racing to the beat of the drums and roar of the crowd is one of Hong Kong’s most exciting and popular festivals.

In 2001 many competitors are expected to participate in dragon boat races throughout the territory. The stamps are released in Australia and Hong Kong to coincide with the 2001 festival on 25 June.

Both stamps show dragon boat races, one stamp shows these races take place in front of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the other stamp features the Sydney Opera House.

The mosaic tile effect behind the denominations has been adjusted to highlight the stamp values of stamps designed for postal use. This has not been done for the miniature sheet.

THE FESTIVAL.
The 2.000 year-old festival commemorates Qu Yuan’s death. Qu Yuan was a national hero and popular poet in third century BC China. He drowned himself in the Mi Lo River as a protest against a corrupt government. Legend says that as the townspeople tried to rescue him they beat drums to scare fish away and threw dumplings in to the sea to keep the fish from eating his body. Today’s festival activities recall the legendary event with people eating dumplings and teams racing elaborately decorated dragon boats to the beat of heavy drums.

DRAGON BOAT RACING
The boats have ornately carved and painted dragon heads and tails. Each boat carries a steersman at the back and a drummer at the front. A crew of 20 – 22 paddlers sits two abreast.

Dragon boat racing is widely popular in Hong Kong and is one of the fastest growing water sports in Australia, with Sydney and Melbourne holding dragon boat races. The annual Australian Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is usually held during Chinese New year at Darling Harbour.

The designer Kan Tai-keung prepared the layout and distribution of elements in the miniature sheet. The illustrator Chan Kau On completed an actual size, detailed sketch with colour. Computer manipulation was then used to achieve the final effect.
