TAUPO reefer vessel 1966

Built as a reefer vessel under yard No 401 by Bartram & Sons Ltd., Sunderland, England for the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London.
27 August 1965 launched as the TAUPO, named after Lake Taupo and the town Taupo on the Northern Island of New Zealand.
Tonnage open/closed shelterdecker 8.219/10.963 gross, 4.474/6.126 net, 11.325/11.866 dwt., dim. 527.6 x 71.3 x 44.5ft., length between pp 490.1ft., draught 29.7/30.4ft.
Powered by one 8-cyl S.C.S.A. Sulzer diesel, manufactured by George Clarck & N.E.M. Ltd, Sunderland, 17.000 bhp., speed 20 knots.
Crew 47.
Reefer space 483.100 cubic feet.
18 March 1966 delivered to owners.

She was the first British ship fitted out with the Hallern crane-derricks.
12 March 1967 she grounded on arrival in Nelson, New Zealand, after 10 hours refloated without any damage.
June 1969 transferred to the federal Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. (New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., managers).
01 October 1971 management transferred to the P&O General Cargo Division.
19 April 1973 transferred to the Peninsular and Oriental S.N. Co.
10 January 1975 when 50 miles out from Gisborn, New Zealand bound for Great Britain, she returned to port after developing cracks in the engine turbo blower, repair took 3 days.
21 April 1977 transferred to the Strick Line Ltd., London.
19 June 1980 sold to Austasia Line (Pte) Ltd., Singapore, and the same day delivered to the new owner, renamed MANDAMA.
1984 Sold to breakers in Bangladesh, dropt anchor 28 May 1984 on the road of Chittagong.
08 June 1984 scrapping work commenced on the N.Z.N. Shipbreaking Co.
