HORIZON cargo vessel

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Sep 16, 2009 8:55 pm

Built under yard no 84 by Nya A/B Gävle Varv & Verks at Gävle, Sweden, for Red. A/S Svenska Lloyd, Sweden.
Launched 1954 under the name LOMBARDIA.
Tonnage 2.081 gross, 992 net, 3.425 dwt. Dim. 340.2 x 45.1 x 27.6ft.
One oil engine 2SA 8 cyl. manufactured by Nydqvist & Holm A/B, Trollhättan, Sweden, speed 14 knots.

I am not sure she ever has sailed for the Svenska Lloyd, she was already sold in 1954 to J.Lauritzen, Denmark, and renamed LYDIA DAN.
1964 Sold to African Coasters Pty. Ltd. South Africa, renamed HORIZON.

On a voyage from Capetown for Durban and Mauritius loaded with a cargo of 2.600 tons, consisting of fruit, liquor, cement, fishmeal and other general goods, she ran aground and was wrecked off Green Peaks, five miles south-west of Cape Hermes near Port St. Johns on 12 May 1967.
Her 29 men crew was rescued, but the HORIZON was abandoned as a constructive total loss.

Transkei 1994 65c sg315, scott300.
