KARL ANDREEVICH SCHILDER

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Oct 30, 2009 8:17 pm

The first all-metal submarine was designed by Karl Andreevich Schilder (1786-1854). (English web-sites give his name mostly as Shilder)
March 1834 laid down on the Alexandrovsky Works at St Petersburg for the Imperial Russian Navy.
Her hull was made from boiler sheet iron with a thickness of 5 mm and she was strengthened by five frames.
She carried two towers above the rounded hull. Between the two towers was a hatchway for loading large equipment.

To let the submarine dive she carried ballast tanks and by opening two sea-cocks the ballast tanks were filled, to refloat her, ballast water was pumped out by a handpump.
For propulsion she carried four paddles, two forward and two near the stern, the paddles consisted of two folding blades, rotated by handles from inside by the crew.
She carried an aerodynamic ruder in the form of a fish tail.
In the stern tower some kind of a periscope with two mirrors was placed.
Displacement 16.4 ton., dim. 19.8 x 4.11 x 6.6ft.
Armament: 1 mine the mine did contain 16 kg of black powder. Six solid propeller rockets.
Crew 8 till 10 men.
Completed in May 1834. She was unnamed.

After successfully dive trials in the Neva River, the submarine was brought to Kronstadt in September 1834 for further testing.
On 25 September 1840 a test dive was made of 35 minutes, after she surfaced it was found out that one folding paddle was broken off, and she was towed back to her berth.

According to a Russian web-site test were carried out till September 1840 with the same boat, while most web-sites give that a new and improved version was built. I can not find out if it is the same boat or a replacement or an improved version.

Anyhow after the tests a Russian Naval committee decided, that she could not carry out combat missions, the reason given is that she could not find her course, when dived, and that further tests were not more useful.
By an order of the Russian Defence Minister on 9 October 1841 the boat was assigned for destruction. But on Schilder’s request the boat was given to him for private experiments.
After many years of more tests, at least she was dismantled and sold for scrap.
