CASCO

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Nov 07, 2009 8:52 pm

One of the Philippine stamps of which Mr Eliso did give the image on the list is given as the CASCO, Can not find a entry on her on the CD-ROM Ships on Stamps.

The following is copied from Aak to Zumbra, A Dictionary of the World’s Watercraft by the Mariners’ Museum.

It is a type of lighter that serves ships lying at anchor, in port or at the roads at the Philippines, usually as a floating home.
Rectangular in shape, with sheer line turning up slightly at overhanging bow; raked stern; flat bottom.
Sides and bottom planking secured with heavy knees; wide lapped strakes were sewn originally; two rattan lashings, athwartships near ends.
Hull further strengthened with 3-4 crossbeams in pairs, one above the other resting on residual lugs or projecting outboard.
These beams support platforms of bamboo that permit access from one end to the other and provide a place to stand while paddling or poling. Very wide-bladed rudder; inner edge vertical, not following rake of the stern.
On those without sails, hull covered with arched and segmented mat roofing that slides aside to provide access to the cargo.
Covered living quarters aft.
Oculi painted on sides.
Sailing CASCO’s set Chinese battened lugsails to a tall mainmast and a shorter foremast or a single rectangular lugsail to a mast stepped in the forward quarter.
